ABSTRACT

Objective :
This study was performed to evaluate the clinical results of knee joint degenerative arthritis patients treated with oriental medical method

Method:
We reviewed 100 patients of degenerative arthritis of the knee joint, who were cared for at Dong in dang Oriental Medical Hospital and treated by oriental medical methods such as so pung-hwal-hweul-tang, and acupunture of knee joint. We classified patients to 5 pain grade and then analyed by sex-age distribution, frequency of treatment, pain grade after treatment, duration of symptoms, etc.

Result:
1. The distribution showed female predominance (male : female = 1 : 4.89) in sex and 50's , 60's predominance in age 2. In the duration of symptoms , the largest group was "over 3 years" below 5 years (43%) 3. In the 5 Grades of knee joint pain, patients of below the grade was none, patients of grade was the most (63%) 4. Therapeutic effects above "fair" were 91 cases (91%) 5. In the all grades, whatever the pain grade at the first medical examination, Therapeutic effects above "fair" were most frequently found 6. In most of age group, Therapeutic effects were similar 7. In the below 6 months-duration of symptom-group , results showed cases of below the "fair" predominance and In the over 6 months-duration of symptom-group , results showed cases of over the "fair" predominance

Conclusions:
The result of treating degenerative arthritis of the knee joint by oriental medical methods is satisfactory
