Effects of Moxibustion on the Recovery of Urinary Disturbance in Stroke Patients |

ABSTRACT |
Background and Purpose : Stroke is a serious neurological event. It can have temporary or permanent effects on survivors, including deficits in speech, vision, cognition, motor function and volitional control of voiding. The purpose of this study was to assess the therapeutic effect of moxibustion on the recovery of urinary disturbance in stroke patients. Subjects &
Methods : 43 stroke patients admitted to Kyung Hee Oriental hospital were randomly divided into two groups: moxibustion and control group after receiving fluid therapy. The moxibustion group received moxibustion at Chungguk(CV3), Kuanwon(CV4), Kihae(CV6) points six times per week for ten days. Control group didn t receive moxibustion therapy. Outcomes were assessed, in a blinded manner, before treatment began and at the end of treatment, with the urinary disturbance components of the IPSS(International Prostate Symptom Score).
Results: These 2 groups had comparable clinical characteristics, lesion site, and pretreatment impairment scores. By the end of treatment, the moxibustion group showed significantly more improvement than the control group in the subsection of the IPSS(International Prostate Symptom Score) for Frequency Weak Stream Quality of life Obstructive score Irritative score International Prostate Symptom Score total. No adverse effects due to treatment were found.
Conclusion: These results suggest that moxibustion have a therapeutic effect on the recovery of urinary disturbance in stroke patients. |
